Abstract: |
The project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities studies the medieval Ptolemaic tradition in the astral sciences in Arabic and Latin. Part of this tradition are the astronomical handbooks that in Arabic and Persian are called "zîj" (pronounced as "zeech"). These contain large numbers of tables with instructions for their use that allow the practising astronomer or astrologer to calculate arcs on the heavenly sphere (e.g. for determining the times of sunrise or sunset), the positions of the sun, moon and five planets visible to the naked eye, the times and magnitudes of eclipses, and also several astrological functions. After the Mongols had conquered large parts of the Eurasian continent in the middle of the 13th century, Islamic astronomical works became known in Yuan China and astronomers from Islamic societies were active at an official Astronomical Bureau in the capital Beijing. On the basis of fresh observations they compiled a very accurate new set of tables in Persian, which was translated into Chinese in the early Ming dynasty (late 14th century) and of which the most original surviving copy is now extant in Tokyo. This talk will sketch the history of Islamic astronomy in China, present the sources that are still available for reconstructing the activities of Muslim astronomers working for the Mongol emperors of the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and indicate how modern statistics can aid in determining the dependence or originality of medieval astronomical tables. |
