»Embedding surfaces in 4-manifolds«

Abstract:
Freedman and Quinn proved an embedding theorem for spheres in 4-manifolds with good fundamental group in the presence of dual spheres. In joint work with Mark Powell, Arunima Ray and Peter Teichner, we have generalized this to an embedding theorem for surfaces in 4-manifolds. The new obstruction is a Kervaire-Milnor invariant for surfaces and we give a combinatorial formula for its computation. For this we introduce the notion of band characteristic surfaces.
