»The u-invariant of a field«

Abstract:
In 1953, I. Kaplansky introduced a field invariant, which has become a central topic of study in quadratic form theory, the (later) so-called u-invariant. In my talk, I want to show how its study is intertwined with valuation theory, and in particular, how certain results seemingly depend on local-global principles. This may pose some interesting challenges from a constructive point of view.
