Abstract: |
A bit more than a year ago, a single lattice-based polygon known as the Hat was discovered which tiles the plane, but only aperiodically. One needs Hats and anti-Hats for this, wherefore not everyone accepts this as a monotile. Soon after, another shape was found (the Spectre), which also tiles only aperiodically, this time with congruent copies only. This talk will consider and answer the question what the long-range order of these tilings is, and why the result is both surprising and far-reaching. To do so, one needs to combine methods from topology, dynamical systems and harmonic analysis, which then allows to prove that both Hats and Spectres generate structures with pure point spectrum. This is joint work with Franz Gaehler, Jan Mazac and Lorenzo Sadun. |
