| The question whether a given finite-state Markov matrix can show up in a Markov semigroup was formulated some 90 years ago by Elfving as a natural interpolation problem. It became quite famous due to an influential paper by Kingman from 1962. Surprisingly, it took until 1995 until the question was completely solved for 3x3 matrices, and for some special subclasses. This was only recently extended to 4x4 matrices. The problem is reviewed and reformulated in more algebraic terms, which allows for some progress, as needed in bioinformatics and other applied fields. |
