Abstract: |
In this talk I will focus on scaling laws for shape-memory alloys. In particular, I will focus on two complementary microstructures in shape-memory alloys. Firstly, I will discuss nucleation microstructures in a two-dimensional model of highly compatible materials undergoing a hexagonal-to-rhombic phase transformation. Characteristic microstructures observed in these materials are, for instance, `star-shaped' structures. With the help of a scaling law I will quantify the Hadamard jump condition and show that for the hexagonal-to-rhombic phase transformation this gives rise to a quantitative dichotomy for the form of possible nucleation geometries. Secondly, I will discuss a variant of the cubic-to-orthorhombic phase transformation in three dimensions within the geometrically linear theory of elasticity displaying (geometrically linear) $T_3$ structures. Deducing a scaling law, I will show that the microstructures in this transition are in a quantitative sense very complex. This is based on joint work with Janusz Ginster (HU Berlin), Roman Indergand (ETH Zürich), Dennis Kochmann (ETH Zürich), Antonio Tribuzio (U. Bonn), Christian Zillinger (KIT), Barbara Zwicknagl (HU Berlin). |
